ILORIN—Angered by the prospect of a bleak Eid-El-Fitr celebration, no fewer than 20,000 workers in all the 16 local government councils of Kwara State yesterday commenced an indefinite strike over  non-payment of seven months salaries and allowances  by the state government.

Besides, there are strong indication that workers in the state public service and other parastatals of the state government may down tools any time from now over the non-payment of  two months outstanding salaries.

Vanguard reliably gathered that the commencement of the infinite strike by the council workers   was based on the alleged no- readiness of the state government to offset their seven months salaries and allowances, despite the release of bail out funds from the federal government.

Vanguard further gathered that the non-payment of the backlog of the salaries of the council workers was based on the trip of  Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and other principal officers of the government to lesser hajj  and are yet to return.

It was also gathered that the months of salaries owed the council workers by the government range from one local government council to another.

While some local government councils workers are owed three months salaries, others are being owed five and seven months respectively, a situation  the council workers claimed had become worrisome.

Vanguard also gathered that some of the council workers could not meet their families’ obligations since the commencement of the annual Ramadan Fast and the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
