Lagos—A 43-year-old businessman, Lamidi Moruf, was yesterday arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court for allegedly obtaining N1.3 million by false pretence.
The defendant, who has no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining and stealing preferred against him by the police.
The prosecutor, Supol Chidi Okoye, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence in February at Zenith Bank on Campbell Street, Lagos Island.
He said the defendant obtained the said sum from one Olusola Shenaike, under the pretence of selling a Toyota Corolla car to him, which he did not.
According to Okoye, the offence is punishable under Sections 312, (1) (b) and 285 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, and Magistrate A. O. Awogboro granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the matter till June 2 for mention.
