KANO—A man on tricycle, yesterday in Kano, escaped death by the whiskers when a wing of the pedestrian bridge that collapsed on Sunday and killed seven persons, split his Keke NAPEP in two, yesterday.

The incident comes less than 24 hours after the bridge collapsed on a cab, killing seven persons in it.

An eyewitness, Isa Habu, told Vanguard that the incident occurred when, around 9a.m., contractors protected by armed policemen, tried to clear off the remains of the failed structure.

Habu said: “The area was cordoned off but from nowhere the tricycle rider sneaked through and nearly died.”

The eyewitness revealed that the only occupant in the tricycle escaped with injuries and was rushed to a hospital.

Corroborating the eyewitness’ account, police image-maker in Kano, ASP Magaji Musa Majia, said: “I was at the site when the eastern wing of the collapsed foot bridge caved in and broke a tricycle into two.

“We called for reinforcement to clear off the site and restore normalcy to the suburb, and we have invited the contractor for questioning.

“We have commenced criminal investigation against the contractor and would face charges if found wanting.”
