Corporal arrested over shooting of IYC leader

Yenagoa—The police in Bayelsa State have announced the arrest of a corporal involved in the shooting of an Ijaw youth leader, Bekikeme Oyinkuro, during a stop-and-search operation along Igbogene-Okolobiri Road in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.

The victim was shot at about 5pm, Monday, by men of an anti-crime patrol team.

Police, in a statement by the Public Relations Officer, ASP Asimin Buswat, said preliminary investigation showed that the victim was driving a Toyota Camry car, which plate number was covered with a black wrapper bearing the inscription of Ijaw Youth Council Kumbowei Clan Chairman, and refused to stop.

However, Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Worldwide, in a statement issued by its spokesman, Mr. Eric Omare, said: “Mr. Oyinkuro, was with his fiancée when one of the police officers at the check point asked him to stop, which he did.

“While he was driving away, having been asked to do so by the said officer, another police officer asked him to stop and he said he had been asked to go. The officer suddenly shot him.”
