ABUJA — The Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, TAN, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan’s brilliant initiative to source relief and rehabilitation funds for victims, families and communities devastated by terrorism and insurgency in many parts of Nigeria, particularly the North East, describing it as a classic display of compassionate leadership, empathy at its zenith.
The group said in a statement: “TAN commends President Jonathan immensely for the noble and caring initiative which will go a long way to assuage and alleviate the sufferings of families that have lost their homes, possessions and means of livelihood to the ravaging insurgency and terrorism.
“We, Nigerians, have always been our brothers’ keepers, but in the narrowest sense of it, which includes only our relatives and friends.
“It has even been said that ‘giving is a gift from God’ and many people are not quite generous with their funds, nor do they give freely and expect nothing in return.
“That is why many of us glued our eyes on the television sets on Thursday night, 31 July 2014, to watch fellow countrymen and women, albeit the crème de la crème, pour out their hearts in local and foreign currencies to provide succour and support to their fellow Nigerians who are languishing in pains and sorrow.
“As the billions were being bellowed on the microphones and we cheered unnoticed, I remembered that philanthropy has never been a thriving activity in Nigeria. I sensed that something new was happening in Nigeria, a holistic transformation agenda crusade which TAN has been championing was gradually taking roots, and rightly from the top of the Nigerian society.”
“It took the ingenuity of President Goodluck Jonathan to initiate such a fantastic and successful programme which will raise huge amount of money to help those most affected by the insurgency debacle, including the people of Chibok and surrounding villages that have been burnt to ashes, left desolate, and crying loudly for relief and attention.”
