Delta commissioner raises alarm over mass absenteeism by teachers

By Austin Ogwuda

Asaba—DELTA State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, has decried what he described as intolerable mass absenteeism of primary and secondary school teachers from classrooms.

He said that henceforth, government would not fold its arm and watch such flagrant abuse, warning that such erring teachers would face severe sanction.

He said that when he paid an unscheduled visit to Issele-Uku Technical College, he found only two teachers out of the 48 teaching staff in the school teaching.

Muoboghare also noted  that educational curriculum, as prepared by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, “cannot achieve specific learning and behavioural objectives unless broken down into uniform, meaningful and operational weekly and teachable schemes of work.”

Speaking at the opening of the drawing of uniform schemes of work for primary and secondary schools in the state in Asaba, he said: “The benefit of this exercise is to encourage teachers in a given area to have a common template of operation for teaching on a weekly basis.”
