Police urged to caution chairman of dissolved Obio/Akpor council

BY JIMITOTA ONOYUME

PORT HARCOURT— OBIO/ Akpor Peoples Forum,  has called on the Police in Rivers State to caution  Mr. Timothy Nsirim  from saying he would not respect the recent  dissolution of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area by Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Vice President of the group, Mr Solomon Ikegwuru, who spoke to Vanguard yesterday, in Port Harcourt, said that the statement was capable of causing crisis in the council.

It will be recalled that Mr Nsirim and 17 councillors of the council were reinstated by the judgment of a state High Court in Port Harcourt,  six months after their suspension by the state House of Assembly. Five days after their reinstatement, Governor Amaechi announced the dissolution of the council in a statement  by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr George Feyii.

Nsirim and the 17 councillors told newsmen that they would not comply with the dissolution order by the state governor, saying that they were elected by the people. They maintained that the governor had no powers to dissolve an elected council. By the close of work last Friday, Nsirim had not handed over to the Head of Local Government Administration in the council, Mr Azubuike Singer.

Meantime, Obio Akpor Peoples Forum commended the governor for the dissolution, saying that the development would bring peace to the council.
