Armed robbers, weekend, invaded the home of Mr. Felix Hassan Hyat, a former Aviation Minister, in Kaduna, and carted away an unspecified amount of money and property worth millions of naira.
Hyat, who gave an account of the attack in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Sunday, said he was asleep “around 3 a.m, when he heard unusual steps close to his bedroom
“The robbers, numbering about five or so, forced the door open and their leader held a gun to my head and asked me to ‘go and bring the money.”
Hyat, who said the robbers held guns, machets and iron rods, said he obeyed them before he was asked to lie on the ground while his wife took her turn as she was asked to lead the robbers to where she kept her jewellery.
“My wife also obeyed, after which we were dispossessed of our handsets,” added Hyat, who added that the bandits operated for 45 minutes.
He said the robbers, who appeared to have full knowledge of going-ons in the house, also carted away items purchased for the forthcoming wedding of his son.
Hyat said, however, that he was sure that the robbers had no other mission rather than to steal and go away.
The former minister, who described the experience as “very bitter,” said he was grateful to God that no life was lost.
“As a Christian,I know that unless God guards the house, the guards suffer in vain; so, I believe that it was because God took over the situation that the robbers did not go beyond what they did.
“It is something worth celebrating because it would have been worse,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the Police for their efforts toward exposing the suspects and prayed that they would be caught.
Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mohammed Tambari, could not be reached for comments, but a top police source confirmed that the force was already making “appreciable progress” in its investigations into the matter.
