*Madam Asadu
By Chinenyeh Ozor, Nsukka
She hardly could control tears as people trooped to the large Onuiyi compound of Asadu family wailing while sympathizers were in groups lamenting over the news of the death of commissioner of police, Chiwike Asadu in Enugu, last Saturday.
The septuagenarian step mother, Madam Veronica Asadu, could not be comforted as she was virtually rolling on the bare floor while a group of women battled to restrain her from inflicting wounds on herself. Few hours later when she was able to calm down and stare permanently towards one direction, Crime Guard was able to extract one or two words from her.
Describing the late Police boss as “an accomplished quiet gentleman who could hardly hurt a fly right from birth, the woman who reportedly took care of him from infancy after his mother’s early death stuttered; “I am in shock over what has befallen me, what has he done to deserve death?
He lived a quiet life and did not support evil. Those who knew him cannot call him bad names or deride him for any cause. I pray God to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime. My son died for the good of the society, his killers would never go unpunished, certainly one day the law would catch up with them as they killed him without explanation.”
As she manged to bare her sorrowful mind, some sympathizers who trooped in large numbers were wailing while others wore moody faces..as they commiserated with the family over this colossus’death which is a huge loss to Enugu North senatorial zone. Madam Asadu who was still in shock said also that her greatest worry now is the way some people are making diversionary insinuations over the cause of his death.
“What they are doing is diversionary and I feel it is a deliberate attempt by his killers to divert attention to issues that have no bearing to his life. He had no interest in any kingship position anywhere. In fact, by nature, he has nothing to do with things like struggle for kingship or village politics.
He was busy pursuing his professional career and was looking forward to retiring gracefully into his legal profession which he said will be after he must have rested with members of his family for a while. Those doing this are really painting him in a bad light and his spirit will not forgive them. They are not contented with killing him, they now want to paint unimaginable picture of his person.
When Crime Guard visited his village in Amaukwa, Nsukka, both the old, young men and women were seen siting on bare floor, weeping and gnashing their teeth. One of Asadu’s relations, a retired teacher who opted to remain anonymous simply lamented,”Our world ended the day they killed him. We will display his corpse for his killers to eat raw. Our own is finished.”
