The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Bayelsa State Chapter, has marked the 2026 International Women in Engineering Day by installing 20 U-turn traffic signs along the busy Isaac Boro Expressway in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The chapter, led by its Chairman, Engr. Amalate Ann Jonathan Obuebite, said the initiative reflects the association’s commitment to contributing to societal development through practical engineering solutions beyond professional advocacy.

Speaking during the installation, which was attended by members of the Bayelsa chapter, Obuebite explained that the intervention was necessitated by growing concerns over road safety along the expressway, particularly at junctions where motorists often make dangerous turns due to the absence of adequate traffic signs, especially at night.

She said the newly installed U-turn signs would help improve traffic management, reduce accidents and enhance the safety of road users.

“APWEN is not only about advancing women in engineering; we are also deeply committed to using our expertise to solve real community problems,” Obuebite said.

“This U-turn signage is a small but critical step toward reducing accidents, easing traffic flow and protecting lives along the Isaac Boro Expressway,” she added.

According to her, the community service project aligns with APWEN’s national mandate of promoting engineering excellence while delivering sustainable social impact through targeted interventions.

The Bayelsa chapter reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant government agencies and other stakeholders on projects aimed at improving infrastructure, road safety and public welfare across the state.
