The Executive Chairman of Abdullahi Sesan Olowa has inaugurated the Ibeju-Lekki Education Scholarship Board, a new institutional framework aimed at strengthening, coordinating, and ensuring transparency in the administration of scholarships and bursaries for students across the area.
The initiative, according to the council, is designed to institutionalise student support programmes and guarantee a sustainable and accountable system that will continue to benefit indigent and high-performing students in future generations.
The inauguration took place in Ibeju-Lekki, marking what officials described as a major step in the local government’s broader commitment to education-driven development and youth empowerment.
Olowa said his administration has consistently invested in educational support schemes, including scholarships and bursaries for students in institutions such as Pan-Atlantic University and other tertiary institutions across the country.
He noted that while the programmes have recorded successes over the years, there was a growing need for a structured body that would provide legal and administrative oversight, improve coordination, and ensure continuity beyond individual administrations.
According to him, education remains a critical driver of social and economic progress, stressing that every deserving student should have access to academic opportunities regardless of financial background.
He urged members of the newly inaugurated board to uphold integrity, fairness, transparency, and accountability in the discharge of their duties, adding that the credibility of the initiative would depend largely on their commitment to public service.
The board is chaired by Mr. Agbaje Sodiq, with Mrs. Ganiyat Belo serving as secretary. Other members include Mr. Balogun Ridwan, Mr. Sharafa Moruf, Mrs. Odubote Hadiza, Mrs. Osun Shakirat, Mrs. Edunjobi Hassan, Mrs. Adesokan, and Mr. Oladimeji Ibrahim.
Olowa said the composition reflects inclusiveness and broad community representation, bringing together stakeholders from different backgrounds within the local government system, including youth representatives and community leaders.
Responding on behalf of the board, Mr. Agbaje Sodiq expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in members and pledged that the board would operate with professionalism, accountability, and transparency in delivering on its mandate.
The establishment of the Education Scholarship Board, officials said, reinforces the administration’s commitment to building enduring institutions that will expand educational access, empower young people, and support long-term development in Ibeju-Lekki.
