The Federal Government has unveiled a sweeping social protection initiative aimed at safeguarding Nigerian civil servants and their families against workplace risks, declaring that no public worker should face uncertainty in the event of injury, disability, or death.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, described the move as a defining moment in the ongoing transformation of the Federal Civil Service.

She said the newly reinforced Employee Compensation Scheme, ECS, signals a shift from policy promises to tangible welfare support for government workers.

She said: “This is not just another announcement—it is a declaration that the Nigerian civil servant matters. Your welfare is now front and centre, backed not just by words but by concrete action and financial commitment.”

Walson-Jack credited the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating an enabling environment for reforms that directly impact workers’ welfare. She noted that the timing of the announcement, coming just days before International Workers’ Day, underscores the government’s intention to prioritize labour issues.

“This is a powerful message that those who serve this nation deserve to be rewarded not just symbolically, but materially,” she said.

On his part, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, Oluwaseun Faleye, reaffirmed the agency’s readiness to fully implement the scheme, emphasizing that it would provide a critical safety net for federal workers under the treasury-funded system.

Faleye noted that the ECS is designed to compensate employees who suffer work-related injuries, occupational diseases, disabilities, or loss of life in the line of duty. According to him, the initiative ensures that affected workers and their families receive timely financial and institutional support.

“A civil servant should never have to worry that an accident at work will leave their family without support.?This scheme guarantees that assurance,” he said.

Faleye also highlighted the establishment of a dedicated ECS desk within the Office of the Head of Civil Service, describing it as a “one-stop shop” to guide workers on compliance, claims processes, and access to benefits.

The desk, he added, would also drive awareness campaigns across ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure widespread understanding of the scheme.

The initiative forms part of a broader welfare enhancement programme introduced by the Federal Government, which officials say is aligned with the administration’s commitment to improving the standard of living of public servants.
