GCU Cricket Club gain promotion after defeat to Lagos Cricket Club

Government College Ughelli Cricket Club (GCUCC) gained promotion to the Premier Division of the Club Cricket Committee League after defeating Lagos Cricket Club by two wickets at the University of Lagos Cricket Oval.

Captain Zain Awan’s decision to bat first initially paid off as his opening batters, Paul Pam and Moshin Khan, made light work of GCU bowlers before that partnership was eventually broken for them to finish on 123 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs.

Pius Favour claimed 2 wickets for 16 runs in 3 overs to emerge as the Player of the Match, while the likes of Paul Pam, who posted 43 runs off 45 balls, and the duo of Moshin Khan and Eriola Alabi got 29 and 14 runs respectively.

In the second innings, the duo of Vice Captain Shakiru Sadiku and Oluwaseun Ogundipe from Lagos Cricket Clubs both claimed 2 wickets apiece to bring some scare for the batting side of GCU.

Still, the trio of Akporubere Damian (26), Eneduwe Jehry (20), and Azeez Salako (19) brought some stability to eventually end the game on 124 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 19.2 overs.

The victory ensured that Government College Ughelli Cricket Club would not only complete a double over their opponents, Lagos Cricket Club, but more importantly, both teams have now secured their promotion to the Premier Division, where they will replace the already relegated Super Eagles Cricket Club and Rocks Cricket Club of Abeokuta.

Speaking after the game, an excited Captain of GCU, Emmanuel Aghomon, expressed happiness that his teammates showed resilience despite the few issues they had at the early stage, not only to become the champion of the Super Four but also to gain promotion after being relegated the previous season.
