SOKOTO — Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS) has taken a decisive step toward global academic integration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Lahore, Pakistan, aimed at strengthening international cooperation in teaching, research, and professional training.

The Vice Chancellor of NWUS, Professor Mukhtar Umar Bunza, disclosed this while addressing journalists during a press conference following the formal signing ceremony.

He described the agreement as a major milestone in the university’s strategic commitment to internationalisation and academic excellence.

Professor Bunza noted that the partnership reflects the shared vision of the Founder and Pro Chancellor of NWUS, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, to advance higher education through meaningful global engagement that transcends geographical boundaries.

According to him, universities in the modern era must operate within an interconnected global ecosystem where research, innovation, and professional training are strengthened through collaboration.

He said the MoU represents a strategic move to position NWUS more prominently within that ecosystem.

“The primary purpose of this MoU is to establish a structured framework for academic and professional collaboration between our two institutions,” the Vice Chancellor explained.

“It seeks to facilitate mutual cooperation in teaching, research, training, and knowledge exchange, particularly in medical and allied disciplines.”

He added that by aligning the complementary strengths of both universities, the partnership is expected to promote innovation, build institutional capacity, and broaden learning experiences for students and faculty members.

Professor Bunza emphasized that the agreement goes beyond ceremonial significance, stressing that it provides concrete avenues for joint research initiatives, curriculum enrichment, professional training, and specialised academic development programmes.

The MoU also creates opportunities for staff and student mobility, seminars, conferences, workshops, and other scholarly engagements designed to foster intellectual interaction and promote global best practices in higher education delivery.

He further explained that the collaboration is anchored on the regulatory framework of the National Universities Commission (NUC), which governs transnational higher education in Nigeria.

The guidelines, he said, ensure compliance with accreditation requirements, quality assurance safeguards, and institutional capacity thresholds.

By situating the partnership within this regulatory framework, Professor Bunza said NWUS is reinforcing its commitment to responsible internationalisation, transparency, and academic integrity in all its cross-border engagements.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted that the initiative aligns with the university’s guiding philosophy of “Building a Home of Knowledge that Speaks to the World,” noting that such partnerships will enhance NWUS’s global visibility and contribution to national and international development through education.

He expressed appreciation to the leadership of the University of Lahore for their openness and shared commitment to academic excellence, expressing confidence that the relationship would grow into a productive and impactful collaboration.

Professor Bunza also thanked members of the media for their continued support in communicating the university’s progress to the public and reaffirmed NWUS’s dedication to building sustainable academic bridges that benefit institutions, students, and society at large.

The press conference concluded with the Vice Chancellor assuring stakeholders that the partnership would deliver measurable outcomes in research productivity, capacity development, and educational quality, before inviting questions from journalists.
