The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has launched the University Advancement Initiative, a programme aimed at enhancing the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s federal universities.

The initiative, jointly hosted by the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Education, was unveiled at the National Convening of Vice-Chancellors.

In his keynote address, Dr. Alausa stressed the need for Nigerian universities to diversify funding sources in response to increasing competition for talent, research support, and global partnerships.

“The challenge before us is not merely how to secure more funding, but how to build smarter, diversified, and sustainable financing systems that allow our institutions to thrive over the long term,” he said. “This gathering is both timely and strategic. It speaks directly to the future strength, relevance, and long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s university system at a moment when our nation is redefining its development priorities.”

Dr. Alausa highlighted the critical role of universities as the backbone of national development, serving as centres for human capital formation, innovation, research, and leadership development. He noted that traditional public funding models alone are insufficient to meet the increasing demands placed on institutions.

He explained that the University Advancement Initiative will support universities in establishing professional advancement offices, strengthening governance frameworks, and engaging alumni and private-sector partners.

Assuring the government’s commitment to the programme, Dr. Alausa emphasised policy alignment, transparency, and accountability, urging Vice-Chancellors to lead the initiative with ownership and a long-term vision, embedding advancement into their institutions’ culture.

The Minister noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with the goal of making Nigerian universities financially resilient, globally competitive, and nationally transformative.
