The Chairman of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Major General Paul Tarfa (Retd), has called on ethnic nationalities in Adamawa State to leverage the creation of seven new chiefdoms and emirate councils to promote national unity and peaceful coexistence among diverse communities, irrespective of religion or creed.

General Tarfa made the remarks on Saturday in Yola during the Gongola Peoples Forum (GPF) grand cultural festival, emphasizing that peace and unity are essential prerequisites for sustainable development in Nigeria.

“There is nothing Nigeria needs more at this material period than peace and unity, which are the foundation for any meaningful development,” he said, urging people of all statuses in society to support the government in maintaining national cohesion.

Addressing the ethnic groups in attendance, he added, “My dear indigenous ethnic nationalities of Adamawa State, you gather here today in large numbers to celebrate, honour, and appreciate your governor for what he has done in your lives through the creation of chiefdoms and emirates. As you breathe the air of freedom and perform your cultural dances, remember that an enduring unity has been forged for our overall good.”

He further reminded the audience that unity extends beyond the festival, stating, “If you can remain united even with people outside the forum, there is no obstacle you cannot overcome, whether in politics or in facing any phenomenal challenge.”

The National Chairman of the Gongola Peoples Forum, Engr. Markus Gundiri, highlighted the developmental strides already achieved through the establishment of the seven new chiefdoms and emirates, noting that their positive impact has become evident in a short period. He also urged harmonious coexistence with other ethnic groups in the country as a catalyst for national development.

The cultural festival attracted dancers and participants from various states across the North East geopolitical zone, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region while reinforcing the message of unity and collective progress.
