…as Okumagba unveils reform agenda

The Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole SAN, has sworn in Olorogun Victor Akpor Okumagba as the new National President of the Association of Justices of the Peace. The ceremony, held at Ishaka Hotel, Effurun, on Wednesday, drew dignitaries from across the state.

Represented by Mivwodere Okorefe Esq., the Attorney General described the Association as a vital partner in the justice system, noting that peace and justice are inseparable. He highlighted the strengthened role of Justices of the Peace under Section 73 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which mandates their presence during confessional statements to curb torture. He also announced a major training exercise for all JPs in January 2026.

In his inaugural address, Okumagba praised the founding fathers of the Association and underscored the need for renewed commitment amid rising community tensions in the Niger Delta. He unveiled a 7-Pillar Reform Agenda focused on institutional strengthening, capacity building, ethics, digital transformation, community peace initiatives, stakeholder partnerships, and member welfare. He pledged full support for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda.

Outgoing President Sir Chief Sam Odjoji reflected on achievements under his tenure, including peace advocacy campaigns, mediation interventions, and participation in statewide justice activities.

Government officials, peace advocates, and community leaders delivered goodwill messages, describing Okumagba as a unifying figure poised to elevate the Association’s impact. The event also featured an Award of Honour presented to the Attorney General.

New executive members were also sworn in, marking what organizers described as the beginning of a more vibrant and purposeful era for the Association of Justices of the Peace.
