The Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Lagos, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, says his administration will roll out a N400 million empowerment programme targeted at 4,000 families as part of activities marking his first 100 days in office.
Hunpe announced the initiative, tagged Asiwaju Conditional Cash Transfer, during a press briefing held at the council chamber in Ajara, Badagry. He said each beneficiary family will receive N100,000 within a 20-month period.
According to him, the scheme is designed to cushion economic hardship and strengthen small businesses across the council. “Our economic programmes for youths and women, especially in skills development and small-business support, have already taken off,” he said. The council will also establish POS businesses for 100 residents to boost financial inclusion and job creation.
Highlighting infrastructure achievements within his first 100 days, Hunpe said his administration had commenced the construction of three strategic community link roads aimed at improving mobility, commerce and security. He projected that Badagry would have no fewer than 40 completed roads by the end of his first term if the current pace is sustained. “We intend to make road development a signature of our tenure,” he added.
On education, the chairman said the council had completed the full reconstruction of an entire primary school, including the delivery of three new classroom blocks, offices, modern learning facilities and improved toilets. “We are not just building structures; we are building the minds that will shape the future of Badagry,” he said.
Hunpe also listed tourism revival as a major focus of his administration, noting that the inauguration of the BLG Tourism Committee marked the beginning of efforts to restore key heritage sites and position Badagry as Nigeria’s foremost historical tourism destination.
In the area of health and social welfare, he said medical outreach programmes have been expanded, while support to vulnerable households and widows has increased. He disclosed that the once-controversial Pota Primary Health Centre had been fully remodelled and upgraded to a new standard. “If we maintain this consistency, we expect to remodel all our PHCs before the end of this administration’s first term,” he said.
Hunpe reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with traditional rulers and community leaders, noting that their imprest had been reviewed upward within his first 100 days. “We have continued to engage constructively with the traditional institution and provide support that reinforces their dignity and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
The chairman said the achievements recorded so far represent a solid foundation for the years ahead. “We pledged that our administration would not be one of excuses but of results. To the glory of God, our people are already enjoying the dividends of the trust they invested in us,” he added.
