PORT HARCOURT— TWO policemen were shot dead and one injured at Ahoada end of the East- West Road, Rivers State, by unknown gunmen on Sunday.

According to sources, the gunmen drove close to the policemen at their post and opened fire on  them, killing two on the spot while the third sustained severe gunshot wounds.

The intention of the assailants was not clear at press time, but sources said  they probably shot the policemen to collect their riffles. It could not be confirmed if the gunmen went away with the police guns.

Vanguard gathered that one of the policemen had just resumed at the post on the ill-fated day when the gunmen struck.  He was simply identified as Abubaker. The source said he died on the spot

When contacted,  the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Mohammed Indabawa, confirmed the development, but said he had not been properly briefed on the incident.
