Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, paid tribute to renowned fine art photographer Chidozie Oliver Maduka during the 2020 Igue Festival, recognising his outstanding contribution to preserving and interpreting Benin’s cultural heritage through contemporary photography.

Held annually in Benin City, the Igue Festival is one of the most important celebrations in the Benin Kingdom, marking the renewal of blessings by the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II.

In a ceremony rich with tradition, Governor Obaseki lauded Maduka’s photographic work for capturing the “spirit, vibrancy, and regal essence” of the festival and its people.

“Chidozie Maduka’s lens has become a bridge between our traditions and the world,” the governor noted.

“His work deepens the global appreciation of our history, culture, and artistic excellence,” he added.

The Oba of Benin also expressed admiration for the evolving role of visual arts like photography in documenting and celebrating the kingdom’s legacy.

Maduka, known for his thoughtful explorations of African identity through photography, has previously exhibited in international galleries.

His documentation of the Igue Festival contributes not only to historical archives but also to the global narrative of African cultural expression.
