ABUJA: As Christians celebrate the Eastertide, the Controller General, Federal Fire Service FFS, Engr. Abdulganiyu O. Jaji has called for caution regarding water safety and the risks associated with lighting barbecues.

Celebrations in Nigeria often see families engaging in outdoor gatherings, but Engr. Jaji stressed the importance of vigilance near water bodies, especially swimming pools, and cautioned against unsafe barbecue practices that could lead to accidents or fires.

The Controller General of Fire in a statement he personally signed, advised families, especially overzealous youths to avoid lighting barbecues in areas prone to high winds or near dry vegetations, as this can quickly escalate into a fire hazard.

Jaji who congratulated Christians on the Easter celebration, appealed that with increased activities around pools, lakes, and beaches, swimmers should stay within designated safe areas and be mindful of the potential dangers posed by cold water or strong currents.

He added that adhering to safety precautions, including proper supervisions are key to preventing accidents at Eastertide.

Jaji said; “It is a fact that Easter is a time for family fun but it is also important to stay vigilant and keep fire safety top of one’s mind during the celebrations.

“While the warmer weather means that families, peer groups, will be visiting beaches, rivers and lakeside spots, it is also important to warn of the dangers that lurk beneath the surface

“Even when it is a warm, sunny day, the water can still be cold enough to induce Cold Water Shock, which can seriously affect one’s breathing and movement.

“There may also be strong currents which can pull even the most experienced swimmers under the water.

That is why we are urging the public not to be tempted to take a dip in open water spots such as rivers and lakes, no matter how tempting they may look.

“If you fall in the water, float on your back. Easter is also a time for delicious treats, but it is important to stay safe in the kitchen. Never leave cooking unattended. If you need to leave the kitchen while cooking – even for just a few seconds – take pans off the heat or turn them off completely.

“Be mindful of hot surfaces; keep flammable items such as oven mitts, tea towels and cables away from the cooker top”, he counselled.

Engr Jaji also urged citizens to embrace harmony and national cohesion.

Commenting on incessant fire outbreaks caused majorly by fuel-laden trucks, the FFS boss expressed his agency’s resolve to always improve its response time to disaster and other emergencies.

He also disclosed that the service’s partnership with major stakeholders was yielding results.
