Coalition of Youths urges release of detained peace advocate

Coalition of Youths urges release of detained peace advocate

The Coalition of Youths for Vanguards for Democratic Solidarity (CYVDS) has expressed deep concern over the continued detention of Alhaji Bello Badejo, a respected community leader and advocate for peace in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Rabiu Abubakar Mato, the CYVDS condemned Badejo’s arrest on December 9, 2024, by military personnel under what it described as “highly suspicious circumstances.” The group alleges that Badejo is being held in a deplorable facility with limited access to his family, friends, and medical care.

“This is not only an abuse of his human rights but also an affront to justice, democracy, and the rule of law,” the statement read.

The coalition highlighted Badejo’s significant role as a bridge-builder between communities, emphasizing his efforts to promote peace and development through initiatives like building a mosque and a market. It also noted that this is the second time Badejo has been detained, referencing a previous five-month detention earlier in the year without any criminal conviction.

The group vehemently denied allegations of any criminal activity by Badejo, describing them as baseless and calling his treatment unjust.

“We categorically state that Alhaji Bello Badejo is not a terrorist, nor has he been involved in any criminal activities,” the CYVDS asserted.

The coalition called on the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to investigate the matter and urged the Federal Government to order Badejo’s immediate release. It further demanded that the government ensure all Nigerians are protected from unlawful arrest and detention.

CYVDS expressed particular concern for Badejo’s health, stating that his previous detention had caused significant physical and mental harm requiring medical attention both within and outside the country.

“As a coalition committed to democratic principles and justice, we demand that Alhaji Bello Badejo be allowed to seek the medical attention he urgently requires,” the group declared.

The CYVDS vowed to continue advocating for justice and the protection of Nigerians’ rights, pledging not to relent until Badejo is released and justice is served.
