Nigeria celebrates historic election of Martina Abang Chukwuma-Ezike as Lord Rector of University of Aberdeen

Family, friends, and well-wishers gathered in Abuja to honor Martina Abang Chukwuma-Ezike, the first black woman elected Lord Rector of the University of Aberdeen in its 500-year history.

The Cross River-born CEO of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation in Scotland was recently installed at a ceremony held in the university’s Kings College Chapel.

Martina, who completed her MBA at the University of Aberdeen in 2009, has a longstanding relationship with the institution, mentoring students and offering them work placement opportunities through her foundation. With a wealth of experience in the oil and gas sector and leading a charity with national reach, her election has sparked widespread celebrations in Nigeria.

A grand reception was held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, where dignitaries, including former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, extolled her achievements.

“She’s accomplished more than many achieve in a lifetime, and she’s done it outside her home country,” Imoke said. “This is a good reason for us as Nigerians to hold her up as a role model. Martina is a wonderful young woman who has done so much, not just for herself and her family, but for us all. We must celebrate people like her.”

Catherine Agba Ajibike, representing the University of Aberdeen Alumni Association, described Martina as an inspiration. “She is proof that the girl child can achieve remarkable feats when supported. It’s time for women to be given opportunities to showcase their talents and contribute to society’s development,” Ajibike stated.

Martina’s father, Soni Abang, expressed pride in his daughter’s accomplishments. “As her father, I provided the support she needed to succeed, and because of her, I receive the same respect and treatment as any other UK citizen whenever I visit Scotland,” he said.

In her remarks, Martina encouraged young people to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams, emphasizing that Nigerians possess immense talent and potential.

“I want every young girl to know that being a girl doesn’t stop you from achieving great things. If I can do it, they can too,” she said.

The event highlighted Martina’s groundbreaking achievements and her role as a beacon of hope and inspiration for Nigerians at home and abroad.
