Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt – A Look Ahead to the Favourites for AFCON 2025

Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt – A Look Ahead to the Favourites for AFCON 2025

The group stage qualifiers for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025 or CAN 2025) recently ended, and people are already betting on who they think might come out on top at the finals next year.

With that said, here is everything we know so far about one of the world’s biggest men’s professional football tournaments, with a few predictions about which teams have the best chance of winning based on the latest hypothetical AFCON outright winner betting odds.

What is AFCON, and when does it take place?

The 2025 African Cup of Nations is a men’s professional football tournament. It will be the 35th edition of the biennial event, where qualifying African teams compete against each other to win an iconic sporting competition that has been running since 1957.

It’s brought to you by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and for the second time, the competition will be hosted by Morocco, who also happens to be the odds-on favourites to win outright. If they win, it will be the second time that the North African nation has lifted the trophy. They also won in 1976.

The six venues that will be hosting the 2025 AFCON tournament are the following:

  • Stadium: Ibn Batouta Stadium. Capacity: 65,000 (possible expansion to 75,600). City: Tangier
  • Stadium: Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Capacity: 53,000 (possible expansion to 68,700). City: Rabat
  • Stadium: Mohammed V Stadium. Capacity: 45,891. City: Casablanca
  • Stadium: Adrar Stadium. Capacity: 45,480 (possible expansion to 46,000). City: Agadir
  • Stadium: Marrakech Stadium. Capacity: 45,240. City: Marrakesh
  • Stadium: Fez Stadium. Capacity: 45,000 (possible expansion to 55,800). City: Fez

The tournament in Morocco is expected to commence on December 21, 2025, and the final is scheduled for January 18, 2026.

A total of 24 teams made it past the qualifying stage after coming first or second in their respective groups, and the three odds-on favourites to win at the time of writing are Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt.

A closer look at the odds

If you want to partake in safe online betting in South Africa either before or during AFCON 2025, one of the most trusted sites you can turn to today that will soon have the most highly competitive odds is 10Bet SA.

Although the odds aren’t yet available for the 2025 AFCON finals on any fully licensed and regulated sports betting site, the theoretical odds will most look like this when they are eventually released:

  • Bet type: AFCON 2025 outright winner. Nation: Morocco. Odds: 3/1 (fractional), 4.00 (decimal), +300 (American/moneyline). Implied probability rate (IPR): 25.00% – ODDS-ON FAVOURITES TO WIN
  • Bet type: AFCON 2025 outright winner. Nation: Algeria. Odds: 6/1 (fractional), 4.00 (decimal), +300 (American/moneyline). IPR: 25.00%
  • Bet type: AFCON 2025 outright winner. Nation: Egypt. Odds: 6/1 (fractional), 4.00 (decimal), +300 (American/moneyline). IPR: 25.00%

In other words, it’s too close to call between Algeria and Egypt. These two nations will both likely be the joint-second odds-on favourites to win when the odds are revealed.

Which other teams stand a good chance of winning AFCON 2025?

Senegal will most likely be the next favourite to win and should end up being priced at around 13/2 (7.5 or +650) with a 13.30% chance of winning, followed by Nigeria at around 9/1 (10.00 or +900) with a 10% IPR, and Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire) close behind at around 11/1 (12.00 or +1,100) with an 8.30% IPR.

Some of the other qualifying teams that made it past the group stages and are also looking to win are Mali, Tunisia, Cameroon, DR Congo, South Africa, and Angola. In other words, it’s not looking too good for South African fans.

Other African nations that also made it to the finals are the following: Angola, Zambia, Comoros, Mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Benin, and Zimbabwe. The least favourite to win is Botswana.

Comoros won group A, and the runner-up in this group was Tunisia. Morocco and Gabon qualified from Group B. In Group C it was Egypt and Botswana.

Nigeria and Benin qualified from Group D. In Group E it was Algeria and Equatorial Guinea. In Group F, it was Angola and Sudan. Zambia and Ivory Coast qualified from Group G, DR Congo and Tanzania did the same in Group H, as well as Mali and Mozambique in Group I, Cameroon and Zimbabwe in Group J, South Africa and Uganda in Group K, and Senegal and Burkina Faso in Group L.
