Imo State citizens in diDiaspora have warned the Governor of the state, Chief Rochas Okorocha against the proposed relocation of Imo State University (IMSU) to Ideato North in Orlu senatorial zone.

The group warned that the proposed relocation had political undertone and would bring disharmony among all the senatorial districts in the state.

Reacting to the situation, spokesperson of the group, Mr. Sylvanus Amadi, condemned the move by Governor Okorocha to move the university campus to Orlu, saying: “The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Obinna Duruji, who is from the same Orlu zone, had said the governor’s reason for this was to decongest Owerri metropolis.

But the the Governor  in his 2012 budget proposal, said his own reason for the relocation of the university was as a result of a directive from the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC).

“If his reason is to decongest Owerri, one would have expected him to relocate the Owerri campus of the university to the official sites provided by Mbakwe’s administration at Uvuru-Mbaise/Ngorokpala or the Ogbaku site by late Evan Enwerem and site the School of Engineering in Okigwe since Orlu zone has the university’s Teaching Hospital already.

According to information, the Imo State University was established in 1981 through Law No. 4 passed by the Imo State House of Assembly, Owerri.
