The story about Japanese men who are salary earners handing over their entire salary to their wives to manage the home has popped up again on the internet.
It trended years back with many foreigners questioning whether it’s a myth or not. Reports say its not a myth but a tradition that became necessary after World War ii. After handing over the entire salary, the wife gives the husband pocket money which is known as ‘Okozukai!
There was a report by Alarabiya news in 2016 about how Japanese salary men were finding things difficult after their wives cut their pocket money. Haa! That’s impossible here. There are things that cannot happen to a black man much more a Nigerian. That woman is leaving the house that day. In the first place, the man in this clime will not even be truthful about how much he earns. And the woman?
That’s an opportunity for some to show off and live like the boss, and forget her age long role as homemakers. Anyway, this Japanese tradition is evolving as time changes. Still it can only happen in Japan. No wonder people say they exhibit high moral standard; perhaps it’s a result of having the mother concentrate with nurturing the children into well behaved adults.
Picture it as a tradition in Nigeria. By now every family will be on the street shouting ebi npa wa (we are hungry). We already have a situation whereby both husband and wife are working, struggling yet people are falling deeper into poverty hole. How disastrous it will be if the man is the sole breadwinner. In addition, since the Japanese men only get ‘Okozukai’ for things like beer and cigarettes, this tradition can never be accepted here because it will spoil side chick business for them.
