Strike disrupts Ph.D exam in UI

BY OLA AJAYI, IBADAN

THE on-going strike of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities across the country has disrupted  examinations of some doctoral students of the University of Ibadan.

The examination was to take place at the Faculty of Education and other faculties in the institution.

Also, the industrial action forced the management of the school to cancel the meeting of the Committee for promotion and appointment which should have been held yesterday.

The Chairman of the academic union, Dr. Segun Ajiboye disclosed this while speaking with newsmen yesterday on the strike.

To ensure strict compliance with the directive of the national body of the union, the UI branch of the union, had set up monitoring committee that would move round the institution.

The union chairman said, “the government has again decided to throw the university system into darkness by prompting a national strike of ASUU through its refusal to honour its agreement signed in 2009 in spite of all entreaties”.

He added that the union had patiently waited, written several memos, approached the respective government agents and departments, yet all that ASUU had got in response was a stalling strategy by government.

Dr. Ajiboye further directed his members to shun all formal academic exercises, seminars and other formal academic gatherings and events.
