UGHELLI— Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Delta State University, Abraka, chapter, has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the state government to secure the release of the kidnapped wife of its Chairman, Mrs Edna Mordi, and another member of the university and his family, Mr. and Mrs John Atori.

While Mrs Mordi was kidnapped on her way to a ceremony last Sunday and reportedly driven off in the booth of her Toyota Camry car, Mr. John Atori and his family were kidnapped on Monday.

ASUU, in a statement by its Vice-Chairman, Dr. Laz Etemike, and Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Biri, yesterday, said it “condemns in strong terms the kidnapping of the wife of its chairman, Mrs Edna Mordi and a member of the university and his family, Mr and Mr John Atori, the chief technologist in the Department of Biochemistry.

“This explains the state of insecurity within the university and the Abraka community in general.

“The situation has deteriorated to the extent that members and their families are no longer safe. It is obvious that nobody can work under such environment.

“ASUU DELSU, therefore, demands for the unconditional and immediate release of those kidnapped. The union thus calls on the university administration, the security agencies and the state government to take immediate steps to secure the release of those kidnapped and to check the state of insecurity.

“If this is not done, the union would have no choice than ask its members to stay at home. The union will no longer compromise the security of its members and their families.”
