ABRAKA – Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Delta State University, Abraka Chapter, has rejected the new tax regime being implemented in the institution, saying it should be put on hold until agreement is reached with stakeholders to avoid industrial unrest.
Chairman of the Union, Mr. Stephen Oghenejenavwo, said stakeholders’ consent was necessary to reach an acceptable tax regime in the interest of peace.
He said the new tax was too high and capable of eroding the purchasing power of members.
Giving an analysis of the new tax, the SSANU Chairman said a professor now pays N100,000 tax monthly; director, N70,000 while a cleaner pays N10,000.
He acknowledged that tax is a civic responsibility of workers, but said the one being implemented in the school was different from what was obtained in other institutions in the country.
He urged the government to refund all over-deduction already made even as he appealed to well-meaning Deltans to prevail on the school authorities to stop the exercise in the interest of industrial peace.
