UGHELLI-DELTA State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said the refusal of the proprietors of public Universities across the country to implement the 2009 ASUU/FGN Memorandum of Understanding, MoU may paralyze the university system in Nigeria.

Briefing newsmen, the State chapter chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Mordi warned the federal and state governments on the looming crisis on the delay in the implantation of the MoU.

Mordi, who was flanked by four executive members of the Union, listed underfunding, low patronage and lack of private sector contributions as some of the problems facing university education in the country and said the proposed indefinite strike action by the union was on this basis.

He insisted that unless the July 2011 agreement was upheld and implemented, the university sector would witness unprecedented upheaval that would lead to the total collapse of the system by the end of November, 2011.

He said; “the campuses remain in a state of dilapidation. In fact, lecture theatres, lecture halls and students’ hostels are not only inadequate but are in a miserable state of repair.

“Laboratories and workshops are shadows of their former selves, counters and shelves in our laboratories that are supposed to be housing chemicals and reagents are now playgrounds for rodents. No wonder many science programmes are regularly denied accreditation by the National Universities Commission, NUC, in our Universities.”
