Abuja – An Abuja-based Islamic scholar, Imam Fuad Adeyemi, on Sunday in Abuja attributed the cause of crisis in the northern part of Nigeria to the perpetrators’ low level of education.

Adeyemi, while speaking at the public presentation of “Educational News Digest’’, said crisis should be expected in an area where the patronage of education was low.

The scholar who is the Director of al-Habibiyah Islamic Academy in Abuja said recent statistics show that a large percentage of the youths in the North are not educated.

He said this was because they have shunned formal education.

“In such areas, you should expect crisis like Maitatsine, Boko Haram and the rest of it, because of lack of education,’’ Adeyemi said.

He commended the monthly educational magazine’s publisher for the initiative, saying the efforts would go a long way in addressing educational challenges in the North and other parts of the country.

Adeyemi, who was the chairman of the occasion, recommended the magazine for all education lovers, saying the country was backward because “we are not reading as a nation”.

In his remarks, Mr Isa Marighu, the representative of the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, Alhaji Jibrin Paiko, applauded the publisher’s efforts.

He noted that the publication was geared towards the promotion of education in the country.

Paiko expressed the commission’s readiness to identify with the efforts and give it necessary support.

A Nigerian-based Turkish publisher, Adam Gurouz, also hailed the publication of the new educational magazine in Nigeria.

He said it would go a long way in minimising ignorance and poverty in the country.

Gurouz identified ignorance, poverty and conflicts as the major enemies of a nation, and said it could be cured through education, industry and unity.

Earlier, the Editor-in-Chief of Educational News Digest, Salahudeen Yunus, had said the new magazine would focus on education news, programmes, and projects.

He said this would be with the aims of promoting education through the media.

“Educational News Digest strives for excellence and masterfully dissects issues that are germaine to the growth and overall development of the education sector in Nigeria”, Yunus said.

He said the magazine would not only inform, entertain and educate, but also traverse other areas of human interest to make it a total package for the reader.

The magazine’s public presentation was attended by education stakeholders such as principals, teachers, students and proprietors of schools in Abuja.(NAN)
