The question on the lips of every one who visited the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti last week, on sighting one Blessing Eke, was, what could have warranted her snuffing life out of a baby who did not beg to come to the world?
The young mother who gave her age as 22, reportedly poisoned her three- months -old baby and watched her die, following her inability to pay the hospital bills after delivery.
The whole drama started in May 2011 when all of a sudden, a pregnant woman later identified as Blessing Eke, was rushed into a private hospital at Bolade area of Lagos , in labour pain. The contraction, as gathered, continued for the better part of the day without her been able to deliver the baby. The doctor on duty reportedly opted for a caesarian operation, before she was delivered of a bouncing baby girl.
But trouble started for her following her inability to pay the hospital bill of N100,000, as she could only afford N50,000. The hospital management reportedly insisted she paid the balance before she would be discharged, but because she could not, she was kept in the hospital since then.
A new twist however unfolded itself following the sudden disappearance of the woman from her bed space, last week. Apparently thinking she had gone to get something to eat, the nurses waited patiently in vain, without any sight of the young woman. One of them said to have attempted to cover the baby with a wrapper, discovered that she was still. On further check, the baby was confirmed dead. Doctors report, as gathered, showed that the innocent and helpless creature gave up the ghost eight hours before.
One of the nurses was said to have perceived a substance suspect to be petroleum product on the baby. On closer observation, a keg in which the substance suspected to be petrol was discovered close to the bed, thereby confirming their doubt. Some of the substance was also discovered to have stained the bed.
Policemen from Akinpelu division when contacted visited the hospital where the remains of the baby was removed. Her mother who took to her heels, was however arrested and transferred to SCID, Panti.
