Lagos –  The Nigeria Premier League (NPL) has blamed the elongation of the current league season on the April general elections.

The NPL also noted that the ongoing Federation’s Cup was also to blame for the postponement of some league matches.

NPL secretary Tunji Babalola said  on Tuesday in Lagos that the body could not say when the season would end.

The 2010/2011 league commenced in November 2010 and was expected to have ended in May but it suffered many postponements of matches.

“It is very unfortunate that the current season has yet to come to an end. This was caused by circumstances beyond our control.

“It ought to have been concluded in May and by now we could have commenced the 2011/2012 season.

“At the moment I cannot precisely tell you when the season would eventually come to an end because some of the postponed matches have yet to be played,” Babalola said.

Babalola also said  that the NPL would have to liaise with the competitions department of the NFA in order to avert a recurrence of needless postponements in future.

“It is not the responsibility of the NPL to draw up the schedule for matches; it is the responsibility of the competitions department and we have to meet with them.

“Our aim right now is how we can formally end the current season. I cannot say when it would end,” the NPL secretary said. (NAN)
