Family of detained Delta community chairman appeals to IG

By Simon Ebegbulem, Benin City

DESPITE the Federal High Court injunction restraining the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Zone 5, Benin, Alhaji Bala Muhammed, from arresting one Mr Daniel Odonghanro, the chairman of Tisun Community Management Council in Warri North Local Government Council of Delta State, he was arrested last Monday on the orders of the AIG.

Odonghanro had criticized the AIG  through a letter to the Inspector General, IG, by his counsel, accusing the AIG of unfair handling of the case of assault and attempted kidnap against him by some persons in the community and appealed to the IG to assign the case to the Force Headquarters.

It was  learnt that after the publication of the letter to the IG, the AIG ordered his men to arrest  Odonghanro. But sensing danger, the petitioner ran to the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, where he got an injunction from Hon. Justice M.A.Onyetenu, restraining the AIG from arresting or intimidating him.

But when Odonghanro went to the Federal High Court on Monday for the hearing of the case, policemen, who informed him they were acting on the orders of the AIG based on a fresh petition against him from members of his community, picked him up and drove him to Benin, where has been under arrest.

His family members, who visited Vanguard offices to protest what they described as illegal incarceration, cried that since his detention, he had been deprived of his high blood pressure medication which had put his life at risk.

The family appealed to the IG to save the life of the petitioner by intervening in the matter, saying that it would be unfair and against the rule of law for the petitioner to suffer continuous detention because he was fighting for his fundamental human right.
