WARRI—AN irate mob, yesterday, invaded and chased away doctors, nurses and patients from the General Hospital, Orerokpe, Delta State.
Also, a youth just released from police custody in connection with the attack on a medical doctor attached to Aboh General Hospital, Ndokwa, which led to the closure of the hospital for 10 months by the state government, is threating the peace of the health institution. Staff of the hospital are panic-stricken.
The Orerokpe crowd were reportedly in search of a man that allegedly shot somebody in the community. However, the man, who brought the victim to the hospital for treatment was attacked by the mob at the accident and emergency unit of the hospital.
The man who, allegedly shot somebody in error, had reported himself to the police. He was in the emergency ward for the treatment of the victim when the vengeance-seeking mob swooped on the hospital.
A nurse told Vanguard that policemen who came to tender a police extract, allowing the hospital to treat the victim, were still within the premises when the mob stormed the hospital. The nurse said: “The man in question fired gunshots into the air to disperse the crowd. But they attacked him and the policemen took to their heels.”
Delta Police Public Relations Officer, Charles Muka, who confirmed the incident, told Vanguard at about 6.30pm that before the police could get there, the mob had caused had left.
