SAPELE – FOUR members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Sapele, have been reportedly injured and are currently receiving medical attention at a private hospital in the town following hostilities by rival groups to take over the union’s motor park.

The NURTW, Sapele, in a statement by the chairman and secretary, Comrade Ovo Abeke and Joseph Ajekuko respectively confirmed that four of their members were injured and rushed to the hospital after an attack on them on Friday, June 24, at about 6.00 am by thugs, hired by those who want to forcefully shut down the motor park.

The union leaders, who cried out that their lives are in danger  said the thugs invaded the NURTW office with various kinds of weapons and their sponsor, a politician (names withheld) had boasted he had the backing of security agencies and  would them out of town.

They called on the Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police, in charge of Zone 5, Benin City, Edo State and Commissioner of Police, Delta State Police Command Asaba, to come to their aid”.

The Sapele NURTW leaders said there was no crisis within the union, as that was happening was an invented crisis by some power-obsessed politician to cajole the union to toe his stance.
