AKURE—THERE are fears of defection in the troubled Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members in Ondo State to Labour Party, LP, and Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.
Vanguard gathered that two chieftains of the party, Col Tunde Awodeyi (Rtd) and the former finance commissioner, Chief Tayo Alasoadura and their supporters are billed to decamp soon.
The defection may not be unconnected with the lingering crisis and the woeful performance of the PDP in the state in recent times.
Plans have been concluded to receive Awodeyi and his supporters from Ose council areas of the state by Governor Olusegun Mimiko while the leaders of ACN are to receive Chief Alasoadura and his supporters.
Chief Alasoadura is to contest the 2012 governorship election under the ACN.
Also, some failed members of the state House of Assembly are equally billed to defect to the two parties. Some of them include Thompsom Atikase of the PDP who would be moving to ACN while Kunle Odidi of the ruling LP is moving also to the ACN.
Speaking on the planned defection of the PDP chieftains and their supporters, Prof Olu Agbi blamed it on the leadership style of former governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu and Dr. Tayo Dairo.
In a statement, the Publicity secretary, Prince Mike Omogbehin, said the loss of five elections in a row was enough to discourage the members and supporters of the party.
“As you are already aware that the leaders and stakeholders of our party held a meeting where decisions were taken and these decisions include the suspension of Dr Agagu and Dairo with the dissolution of the State Executive.” Committee, SEC, and replacing it with the interim of management committee”.
In other places both Dairo and Agagu would have stepped aside in the interest of the party6 but both of them were both positioning themselves for higher offices. Also, under the Dairo led SEC the State Secretary, Barrister Sola Oludipe and the Women leader, Lady Folake Akinjoko resigned to contest elections and to the bewilderment of all members of PDP in the , they simply walked back to the Executive to assume their positions as if we were in a banana republic.
