Rainstorm kills 2 footballers, injures several others

Mai’adua (Katsina State) – Two persons, Imran Balarabe and Sani Abdullahi were killed, while several others sustained various degrees of injury following a rainstorm in Mai’adua town in Katsina State.

The  storm also destroyed part of the Mai’adua market with the roofs of some of the stalls blown off by the wind that heralded the rain.

An eyewitness in Mai’adua on Thursday said  that the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 4.30 p.m. during a football match between Mai’adua and Daura youth teams.

The eyewitness said that the wind, which preceded the downpour, forcefully removed the roofs of some of the stalls in the market and flung them into the football field during the match.

He said that the flying roofs hit and killed Balarabe and Abdullahi, who were both playing on the field while several of their team mates were injured.

Balarabe died instantly, while the injured players  were rushed to General Hospital Daura for treatment, where one of them, Sani Abdullahi later died.

Alhaji Idris Sulaiman, the acting Chairman, Mai’adua Local Government Council, who confirmed the incident, described it as unfortunate.

He also said that the local government council would settle the medical bills of the injured players and other people, who were wounded as a result of the rainstorm.

Suleiman condoled with the families of the dead players, and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured persons. (NAN)
