ABUJA — The Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Thursday, lauded President Goodluck Jonathan for signing the Freedom of Information, FOI, bill into law, though it added that “there is still a long way to go in bringing about the needed stability that unfettered access to information brings.

The CPC which Thursday in Abuja, issued a press statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Rotimi Fashakin, maintained that the new law would open a new vista into the ease to access of Information to engender responsible democratic governance in the country.

It would be recalled that CPC which is currently challenging the victory that was secured by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the April 16 presidential election, before an election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, declined to join other opposition parties in a parley they held with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Aso Rock Villa.

However, the party in its statement maintained that, “the CPC as a political party, hereby expresses satisfaction on the signing into law the Freedom of Information bill.

“Undoubtedly, this opens a new vista into the ease of access of Information for the engendering responsible democratic governance,” it added.

“Whilst commending the outgoing legislature and President Goodluck Jonathan for the courage and forthrightness in bringing about this law, there is still a long way to go in bringing about the needed stability that unfettered access to information brings.

“The current FOI law, as it is, can only provide the plank for future amendments that shall give the true meaning to the Nation’s democracy and radical change from the culture of impunity that had characterized our brand of democracy in the past” it added.
