Educationist blames Govt on falling standards of education

By Samuel Oyadongha, Yenagoa

A Yenagoa based educationist Mrs. Wealth Jane-Obibi has attributed the falling standard of education in the country to lack of proper foundation in most public schools.

Jane-Obibi, in an interview in Yenagoa said “government is yet to find its feet because it is yet to deem it fit to establish schools at the Nursery level as a stepping stone for children.”

According to her, “government does not own nursery schools which are the foundation of education.”

She said, “a child needs to start his or her education from the nursery level. A child really needs a stimulating and beautiful learning environment.”

“The absence of proper foundation, which include lack of facilities such as desks, writing materials and poor motivation and training of teachers in the public schools by the government are part of the problems of the dwindling education standard,” Mrs. Jane Obibi, who is the proprietress of Cedar Court British International School said.

Mrs. Jane-Obibi who observed that part of the problems in public schools is the overcrowded nature of the classrooms which make learning not conducive for children added that in her school, a classroom is meant for just 15 pupils.

On the way forward, she stressed the need for government to ensure that teachers are well motivated, trained and re-trained as well as embark on regular review of school curricular.

Mrs. Jane-Obibi also called on government to increase funding for both lower and higher education; provide good frame work for teachers in order to achieve best practices on education.

She however, lauded the governments of Rivers and Akwa/Ibom states for revamping the educational sectors in their respective states.
