Asaba – Mr Ned Nwoko, Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) senatorial candidate in Delta North, has been arrested for allegedly attacking INEC officers at INEC Office in Asaba.

He was said to have been arrested at the INEC Office in Oshimili South Council Secretariat when he allegedly led his supporters to raid the office and attacked the electoral officers.

An eye-witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Nwoko and others stormed the office at about 8 p.m. on Saturday while collation of National Assembly results were going on.

Source said that Nwoko accosted the Electoral Officer in the area, accusing her and her team of doctoring the results of the election in favour of his opponent.

He allegedly, ordered his boys to dislodge the electoral officers and collect the results.

“While there was  a shouting match between him and the INEC Officer, his boys started firing guns  sporadically which made people to run for cover, and the results were torn by his thugs.

“They also descended on anybody they could lay their hands on, beating them to pulp, including Chief Francis Nwajei who was around for the collation of results,” the source said.

The source said that it was while the trouble was raging that a joint military and police team arrived the scene, arrested and took him away in their vehicle while his thugs fled the scene.

NAN recalls that during the PDP senatorial primaries in 2007 in which Nwoko contested against Mrs Marian Ali, he was also involved in violent acts and was arrested for possessing arms.

It was learnt that arms were allegedly found in the boot of his car as at the time of his arrest.

Police spokesman in Delta, Mr Charles Muka (ASP), when contacted could neither confirm nor deny the arrest of the politician, saying, “I am yet to be briefed on the incident”. (NAN)
