FORMER minister of information and communications, Prof Dora Akunyili who is the senatorial candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, for Anambra Central has described as an empty threat alleged decision of drug dealers in Onitsha to stop her senatorial ambition, saying they should be prepared to die when she is elected senator.

Addressing reporters in Awka, Akunyili insisted that she would prefer to lose than win with the votes of those she described as making blood money. She said it was regrettable that such people could still be raising their heads in a country like Nigeria.

“They (drug dealers) send messages, but I am not worried because I know that they do not have the capacity to intimidate me. They know that they are doing bad business and that is why they wanted to kill me.

“I have heard that one of my opponents said that he will discuss with the fake drug dealers to vote against me because of my role in NAFDAC during which I fought them to a stand still. But what people don’t know is that these people are very few and cannot be a threat to anybody’s ambition.

They are enjoying the boom because of the flaws in the country’s legal system. But I want to say that those of them who vowed that I will be a senator over their dead body should be prepared to die because they are not God.

“Besides, I do not need their votes to win. I must add that it is their desperation that caused all the trouble in the drug market and I am happy that we did our best to contain them and saved the lives of our people,” she said.
