WARRI — A MEMBER of the Delta State Water Ways Security Committee, Mr. Omolubi Newuwumi, has called on the state Police Commissioner to come to their aid, as  armed robbers and cultists have  taken control of the old port town.

In a letter  to the Police Commissioner,  Omolubi,  said for the past three months,  the inhabitants of the town had not known peace nor sweet sleep as the place has become a haven for these hoodlums, adding that only last Wednesday, an Ijaw man identified as Okporokpor Talate, was killed in a cross fire from these bad elements.

The Niger Delta youth activist, said the robbers and cultists, who operate with impunity between 7 pm and 11 pm daily, have overwhelmed the police in Sapele, robbing stores, drinking joints, supermarkets and also engage in car snatching along the  busy Sapele/Warri highway. He expressed regret that these unwholesome activities had crippled socio-economic activities and night life in the town.

“One might be tempetd to say that with the presence of former militants currently being accommodated in some hotels in Sapele, the police would do well by beaming their search light on their activities.”

He said that the leaders of these secret cult groups,  go about in the open with dangerous weapons  known to the police and are never apprehended or prosecuted.  While stating that the nefarious activities of the hoodlums pose a great threat to the peace and security agenda of  Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s three-point agenda,  he called on the state police boss to rise up to the challenge and beef up security in Sapele town and the Sapele/Warri highway to protect the lives and property of innocent Nigerians, especially now that the yuletide season is near.
