NIGERIAN Journalists in Lagos at the weekend kept so many sports fans wondering if indeed they were journalists or professional sports men and women as they tickled them with skills in the final of the Lagos State NUJ Media Games.
The artificial pitch of the National Stadium was jampacked with spectators who have been denied sporting activities in Lagos State . And they got all the thrills in the explosive soccer final where LTV dethroned Lagos Information 1-0 to win the all important soccer gold medal. But at the end, it was Lagos Information that had the last laugh when for the umpteenth time the won the Games with nine gold, six silver and silver bronze.
Newswatch finished second with six gold, and two bronze medals while The Nation came third with four gold two silver and one bronze medal. The Sun Newspapers emerged the Best Behaved Team while the Most Valuable Player award went to LTV’s Godwin Onanari. The 5-Aside soccer gold went to Lagos Information.
But the high point of the closing ceremony was when Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, sole sponsor of the Ladi Lawal 5-side rewarded the winners of the soccer event with N500,000.
The crowd went berserk in celebration and Otunba yet again rewarded the winners of the 5_Aside with N250,000, while Silverbirds got N200,000 for finishing second and SportsDay pocketed N150,000 for bronze. Chairman Wahab Oba was glowing with pride as Journalists drenched in joy burst into songs and soaked themselves with drinks to bring one week of sports entertainment to an end.
