ABUJA—The Alliance for Democracy, AD, has asked the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, to prevail on its members who decamped to the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, to hand over all its documents and property in their possession.
Acting National Chairman of Alliance for Democracy, Rev Okechukwu Obioha, who made the call in a petition addressed to INEC chairman, described as untrue, false and unfounded insinuations making round that the entire structure had dissolved into ACN.
Rev. Obioha said the Alliance for Democracy, AD, was still intact, saying it was only Chief Michael Koleosho, Alhaji Musa Umar, Rev Tunji Adebiyi and Alhaji Magaji Kwarianga who decamped to Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.
He said: “We, the remaining members of NEC, after objecting the eclipse/merger of our great party into Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, met immediately and unanimously appointed Rev Okechukwu Christopher Obioha the National Vice Chairman S/EAST to act as the National Chairman, pending when a convention is held to elect substantive NEC members, including the office of the National Chairman.
”We request and appreciate with utmost importance and expectations that the INEC you now head, will do the legal and right thing by approving what we have done in the given circumstance.
”Please direct Chief Michael Koleoso, the former chairman, and the other trio named above to hand over every document and property of Alliance for Democracy in their possession in the interest of true democratic practice you have come to bequeath us and for the peace and unity of this country.
“The above named former NEC members of Alliance for Democracy, AD, had worked assiduously since 2006 they were elected to their various positions to emasculate and merge Alliance for Democracy, AD, against the wishes of members of the party into Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.
”With the millions of naira INEC, Abuja, has released to Alliance for Democracy, AD, since 2006 till the 23rd September, 2010, no money was given either to the state or zonal chairmen to run the party. They had run the account of the party like a limited liability company owned solely by them.
“The treasurer has never, since 2006, signed any cheque. They have milked AD dry by withdrawing and spending monies of the party at will without the approval of the NEC. No member of the party, especially the rest of the NEC, knew how much had been given or withdrawn from the account.
“The Secretary, Alhaji Magaji Kwarianga, is the custodian of the party’s cheque book and not the treasurer.
”The constitution of the party makes provision for three yer tenure of two terms and since they were elected in 2006, their tenure has expired. Our last Convention should have been elective but because they attempted foisted merger on us, they opted for non-elective Convention.
Obioha recalled that, “on the 1st September, 2010, they purportedly called for a NEC meeting with an attendance of forty three where the real NEC members in attendance were not up to twenty. They coerced, intimidated and tried to impose the merger of our party into Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
It is noteworthy though, that even if the forty three in attendance are assumed to be genuine NEC members of the party, they are not up to two third of our NEC as required by law. They goofed.
”We went for our National Convention as directed by INEC, Abuja and the Convention was a charade. Out of ten members each from every state agreed by the Convention Committee members, only one genuine member each came from twenty one states.
The above named moved motions, made speeches and declarations that showed their interest and movement into Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.”
