ADDIS ABABA—THE African Union, has expressed grave concern over political developments in the country arising from the October 1 twin bomb blasts that nearly marred the 50th independence anniversary celebrations.
The Union charged Nigerian political leaders to guard their utterances over what it called the bad situation.
This was just as the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, described the call by the Northern Political leaders on President Goodluck Jonathan to resign or be impeached as disrespectful not only to the office of the President but also the legacy on which these leaders built in public office.
The African Union which condemned the bomb blasts urged the Nigerian government to thoroughly investigate it and prosecute the culprits.
Chairperson of the AU Peace and Security Council, Dr Monica Juma, who is also the Kenyan Ambassador to Ethiopia said in Addis Ababa, that bringing the culprits to book would serve as deterrent to others planning to execute such heinous acts.
She said: “While we condemn the act in its totality, the AU Peace and Security Council wants the Nigerian government to thoroughly investigate the act, arrest and prosecute those behind the bombings, so that such unfortunate incident will not occur again in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.”
Juma said the recent bombings in Abuja had shown that terrorism was boundless, stressing that for Nigerians to carry out such deadly acts on their national day showed how “bad the situation,” adding: “So, we have condemned it, and we want those behind it to be brought to book.”
National cohesion
In his reaction to the call on President Jonathan to resign or face impeachment, Minster of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu said: “It is surprising that the apostles of this call are not in tune with the new breed of national cohesion that is the focus of the new generation of Nigerians.
Nigerian youths from both North and South are determined to cross the Rubicon of underdevelopment and waste that is the hallmark of the leadership of these self_serving regional leaders.”
Wogu added: “Having had their turn and wasted it, the younger generation are determined to forge ahead with a new Nigeria where neither tribe, tongue nor religion will stifle our development. The condemnable and despicable bomb blasts of last Friday is certainly not a platform upon which anyone should seek to gain political capital.
Using the blood of innocent Nigerians to gain political leverage in the forthcoming presidential election is to say the least despicable and dishonest.
“I call on Mallam Ciroma and the remnant of those still around him to have a positive outlook on the future and should now retire from public discourse if they have nothing more to offer to the positive development of the country.”
