Horsefall enjoins INEC to operate within law

By Jimitota Onoyume
PORT HARCOURT —  FORMER Presidential aspirant, Chief Albert Horsefall, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure it works within the time frame provided by the constitution to conduct next year’s elections.

Horsefall, who spoke in an exclusive interview with  Vanguard in Port Harcourt,  said steps should be taken to discourage the postponement of the elections. According to him, if a reason was accepted for any postponement, it would create another reason to still postpone the elections. He said that the INEC boss should strive to deliver  credible elections  to Nigerians within the provisions of the law.

“Though I said I had quit partisan politics, since there is a law, INEC should work within the law. If you start to extend on one issue, then you will find reasons to extend on other issues. INEC should strive to work within the limit of the law.

“Once that is done, every other thing will follow. I had said it before that Prof. Jega has a herculean task. He is there today, so he should be able to deliver in spite of the shortness of time,” he said.

On his part, a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the region, Chief Kune Igoni, said the electoral body should ensure it carried  stakeholders along before arriving at any decision. “It is a straight forward thing. INEC has said it would meet with stakeholders if they agree then there is nothing wrong. I think the way the INEC is going is ok.” he said.

Adding, a female aspirant for the House of Representative seat on the platform of the PDP in Rivers state, Doris Mcdaniels also supported move by the electoral body to shift the poll.

Arguing that what Nigerians needed at the moment was credible election. she said anything it would take INEC to achieve this should be encouraged.

“I think Nigerians want a credible election. So the electoral body should be encouraged to provide this. So long as INEC acts within the law then there is nothing wrong”.
