SOKOTO — The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State has welcomed Professor Aminu Ibrahim, a former rector of Umar Ali Polytechnic, following his defection from the opposition to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defection was welcomed by the Sokoto State APC Chairman, Hon. Haruna S. Adiyya, who described Ibrahim’s entry as an addition to the party and an opportunity to strengthen its membership and organisational structure.
Adiyya said the APC remained open to individuals who shared its political vision and were willing to contribute their experience, ideas and organisational skills to the party’s growth.
He added that the involvement of people with experience in public administration and educational leadership could enrich the party’s deliberations and support its mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to him, the APC’s strength lies not only in its membership numbers but also in its ability to unite people from different backgrounds around shared objectives.
The chairman urged Ibrahim to work with existing members to promote unity, discipline and cooperation within the party.
He also called on party members to avoid internal divisions and focus on building a structure capable of addressing voters’ concerns, including security, education, employment, infrastructure and economic development.
Adiyya said the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections should be driven by sustained grassroots engagement, constructive dialogue and a commitment to addressing the electorate’s expectations.
Ibrahim’s defection comes as political parties intensify consultations and efforts to attract prominent individuals ahead of the next electoral cycle.
However, the effect of such defections on electoral support will depend on whether parties can translate the entry of influential figures into sustained grassroots participation and stronger engagement with voters.
For the Sokoto APC, Ibrahim’s integration into its political structure will be an important step in determining how his experience and connections contribute to the party’s activities ahead of the elections.
The defection adds to the political realignments unfolding in Sokoto State as the APC and opposition parties prepare to mobilise supporters and strengthen their structures ahead of 2027.
