Atiku: Group urges EFCC to uphold transparency

A coalition of civil society organisations has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to uphold transparency, accountability and due process in the handling of petitions submitted to the commission against Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Transparency and Accountability made the call during a rally and protest, saying its position was based on the need to strengthen public confidence in institutions responsible for enforcing the law.

Speaking at the event, the convener of the coalition, Comrade Solomon Adodo, urged the EFCC to ensure that all petitions brought before it were handled independently and in accordance with established procedures.

He said the commission should rely on verifiable evidence and applicable laws in reaching decisions on matters brought before it.

The coalition also called for equal application of the law, regardless of the status or position of persons involved in matters brought before the commission.

It urged the EFCC to acknowledge and appropriately process petitions submitted to it and to communicate its decisions through the proper channels where necessary.

The group said transparency in the handling of petitions would help reduce speculation and strengthen public confidence in the country’s anti-corruption institutions.

It further urged the commission to ensure that its activities remained guided by due process, fairness and the rule of law.

The coalition said its position was aimed at strengthening public institutions and promoting accountability in the discharge of their statutory responsibilities.
