Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has congratulated former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), on his 85th birthday, describing him as a statesman whose leadership left a lasting imprint on Nigeria.
Dogara, in a congratulatory message, described Babangida as “a statesman of uncommon vision whose leadership helped shape the destiny of Nigeria.”
He said the former military leader’s years in office were characterised by major reforms, infrastructural development and the creation of new states, which, according to him, strengthened representation and gave millions of Nigerians a greater sense of identity and belonging within the federation.
Babangida, who was born on August 17, 1941, rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army before becoming Nigeria’s military Head of State in 1985. He governed the country until 1993, during a period marked by significant political and economic changes.
Dogara noted that Babangida’s administration introduced far-reaching economic reforms, expanded the federal structure through the creation of states and invested in infrastructure across the country
He also commended the former military president for his role in establishing institutions and agencies which, he said, have continued to contribute to national development.
According to Dogara, Babangida’s contributions went beyond his years in government, as the former leader has continued to play the role of an elder statesman by offering counsel on national issues and inspiring younger Nigerians.
He praised Babangida for what he described as his humility, patriotism and resilience, saying his continued relevance in national discourse demonstrated the enduring impact of his years of public service.
Dogara prayed for the former military president’s continued good health, strength and wisdom, describing his life as a testament to service to God and country.
“As Nigerians celebrate his 85 years, we are reminded of the importance of vision, courage and commitment to the common good,” Dogara said.
He said Babangida’s journey remained an important chapter in Nigeria’s political history and that his contributions to the country’s development would continue to attract reflection and debate for generations to come.
